Interview Analysis of Donnie Simpson and Phyllis Hyman
Background
1991 interview of contemporary rhythm and blues singer, Phyllis Hyman conducted by Video Soul host, Donnie Simpson.
Donnie Simpson conducted an interview with music-great, Phyllis Hyman about upcoming song and video releases, and her plans for the near future. The interview was relaxed and fluent, which caused for genuine conversation.
Donnie starts by asking Phyllis what she’s been up to, other than her new album.
She responds by talking about the videos that she’s actually filming for the album, along with mentioning some anecdotes.
Donnie follows- up by asking her if she looks forward to doing the videos, even though she says, “it’s a lot”.
She explains that she doesn’t necessarily look forward to it because it can be boring, but she’s found a way to tolerate it.
He then asks her what her first video was.
She elaborates, by telling him what her first video was, along with all other music videos she’s been in.
After he gets all of the information that he thinks he can get from that, he smoothly changes the topic.
Donnie asks, “After that, are you performing. Are you touring the country? You’re always on the road”.
She explains why people come to see her, and expresses how amazed she is by how frequently some fans come even with expensive ticket pricing and is also amazed at how they can see the same performance multiple times and not get tired of seeing it.
He uses her responses to segue and tie in topics, after she explains, he mentions that he noticed that other artists “can’t get away with” visiting the same city frequently like she has, which leaves an open space for her to elaborate, in which she does.
After they watch her latest music video, instead of finishing in a question-answer interview style, they finish the “interview” with a conversation, which makes the interview even more relaxed.
