Typically, when I annotate, I underline the sentence, words, or phrases that provides the gist of the paragraph, because sometimes extra wording/ continuations are unnecessarily added.
I also typically, highlight words that I am not familiar with or see being used in a different context, and ideas that are particularly similar or unique to my own. When I research the definition, I add an asterisk beside the paragraph, so that I can then have a better understanding of the reading. I sometimes reiterate sentences or phrases that I agree with or find profound beside the paragraph, so that I can easily remember them.
